Cross country (aka XC) is the name of the autumnal racing game. There are a whopping 1062 women’s and 992 men’s programs across Divisions I (DI), II, and III, making it one of the NCAA’s most popular sports. All that collegiate competition is fertile ground for breeding future pros, from Olympians to marathoners.

Sports x Politics: Afghan women’s volleyball team & Megan Rapinoe’s legacy

September 26, 2023

Happy Fall!

It’s a new season but the same ol’ song: Women are still fighting unequal systems within and outside of sports.

So on today’s episode of The GIST of It, co-hosts Ellen Hyslop and Steph Rotz first chat about the Afghan women’s national volleyball team, who compete in defiance of the country’s Taliban rule and are currently speaking out about dismal training conditions at the Asian Games.

Then after the break, the gals give flowers to a women’s soccer and activist GOAT: the USWNT’s Megan Rapinoe, who hung up her international boots over the weekend, leaving both a massive hole in the team and an even bigger off-pitch legacy. And while no one can truly fill her cleats, El and Steph kick around a few thoughts about the future of the USWNT. LFG.
