New York: Concrete jungle where dreams are made of

March 11, 2021
The GIST: As New York sports fans, we know success hasn’t come as easy as we’d like for the past few years (*cough* Jets *cough* Mets). But halfway through the NBA and NHL seasons, we have two top teams in the Nets and the Islanders. The question is: can they bring home the ’ship?

🏀Nets: We’re betting yes. The Nets are only half a game behind the Philadelphia 76ers for the Eastern Conference’s top seed. With the leadership of head coach Steve Nash (recently named the East’s Head Coach of the Month), the addition of Blake Griffin (after he returns from a knee injury) and our favorite Big Three, there’s not a ceiling in sight.

  • But that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy. The Nets run into a big challenge tonight when they face the Boston Celtics, who are now at full-force with the return of star guard Marcus Smart. Tip off’s at 7:30 p.m. ET.

🏒Islanders: We’re saying probably not. The Isles are currently riding a six-game winning streak and sitting atop their division after a 2–1 shootout win over the Boston Bruins on Monday. A major contributor to their success has been goalkeeper Semyon Varlamov, whose .929 save percentage has him on track for one of his best seasons yet. But...

  • While the Isles are hot right now, their earlier slumps make us hesitate to go all-in on Stanley Cup Final tickets. For now, we’re excited to see them extend that winning streak. Puck drops against the NJ Devils tonight at 7 p.m. ET.
