One step closer to naming champions in college tennis and golf
The GIST: It’s shaping up to be the biggest weekend at a country club since Serena van der Woodsen stole a polo horse. By this time next week, three new national champions will have claimed their crowns, so here’s the (iced) tea on everything you need to know.
🎾 Men’s tennis: Mother Nature was not in the mood last night — all the men’s quarter-finals were postponed until this morning due to heavy rain. Also delayed a day? The semis and final that were originally scheduled for today and tomorrow. Spring sports, always keeping us on our toes…
- That said, grab another cup of java and don’t miss the 2022 championship rematch between No. 4 Kentucky and the defending champs No. 5 Virginia, now at 10 a.m. ET.
🎾 Women’s tennis: Back in February, top seed UNC swept No. 4 Georgia to take the ITA Indoor Championship, and now the Bulldogs are back for more in tonight’s 5:30 p.m. ET semifinal. UNC’s looking lethal after ousting reigning NCAA champ No. 8 Texas on Wednesday, so Georgia will have to serve for a shot at revenge (and a trip to the ’ship).
- At the same time, No. 3 NC State (the only team to beat UNC this year) will take on No. 7 Stanford. Don’t underestimate the Cardinal — Stanford’s on a 22-match win streak, so the Wolfpack will need to pull out all the stops to make tomorrow’s final. Claws out.
⛳ Women’s golf: A massive championship field (30 teams, plus six individuals) will hit the links when the six-day finals tee off today. No. 1 Stanford and the electric, Tiger Woods–besting Rose Zhang are primed to defend their national titles, especially after No. 2 Wake Forest and No. 3 LSU failed to top their regionals.
