Team USA falls short 3–2 to Venezuela in WBC title game

The GIST: The 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) came to a close as Venezuela upset Team USA 3–2 in last night’s championship game to earn the nation’s first-ever WBC crown. The final out is in the books, with the Americans stunned for a second straight tourney, but there’s plenty more baseball to come. Red, white…no need to feel blue.
🇻🇪 Venezuela strikes first, rallies in the ninth inning for win: Venezuela jumped out to an early lead in the third inning, then kept the powerful American bats at bay until the eighth, when Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper delivered a towering game-tying home run.
- But that scoreline was short-lived: Two-time MLB All-Star Eugenio Suárez came up clutch with an RBI double in the ninth inning, giving Venezuela a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Crying in the clubhouse.
📈 WBC sees record viewership just in time for MLB season start: This year’s tourney shattered viewership numbers, highlighted by over 7M tuning in for Sunday’s semi between the U.S. and the Dominican Republic — the most-watched WBC broadcast ever. That’s all before anticipated sky-high numbers are released for last night’s title game.
- And timing couldn’t be better with MLB Opening Day on deck next Wednesday. Fans were captivated by the immaculate vibes, espresso-filled celebrations, and passionate play the WBC had to offer — we’ll see how it translates back to the pros. Batter up, indeed.
