Sports x Politics: Afghan women’s volleyball team & Megan Rapinoe’s legacySports x Politics: Afghan women’s volleyball team & Megan Rapinoe’s legacy

Happy Fall!

It’s a new season but the same ol’ song: Women are still fighting unequal systems within and outside of sports.

So on today’s episode of The GIST of It, co-hosts Ellen Hyslop and Steph Rotz first chat about the Afghan women’s national volleyball team, who compete in defiance of the country’s Taliban rule and are currently speaking out about dismal training conditions at the Asian Games.

Then after the break, the gals give flowers to a women’s soccer and activist GOAT: the USWNT’s Megan Rapinoe, who hung up her international boots over the weekend, leaving both a massive hole in the team and an even bigger off-pitch legacy. And while no one can truly fill her cleats, El and Steph kick around a few thoughts about the future of the USWNT. LFG.

Fore!

We have an extra special treat on today’s episode of The GIST of It — a conversation with a trio of Team USA’s best golfers: world No. 2 Lilia Vu, world No. 3 Nelly Korda, and the squad’s Solheim Cup captain, Stacy Lewis. Our producer Dee Lab sat down with the gals to discuss all the deets on the Solheim Cup, one of golf’s most anticipated tourneys.

They’ll chat through the state of women’s golf, what makes the Solheim Cup so unique, how they’re preparing, and what it means to tee it up for Team USA. Happy listening!

Billie Jean King and the match that changed the worldBillie Jean King and the match that changed the world

Happy Tuesday!

And, more importantly, happy Battle of the Sexes anniversary eve! Tomorrow marks 50 years since the legendary Billie Jean King took down self-described male chauvinist Bobby Riggs in the monumental event, scoring a win on the court and a massive dub for women’s equality.

So, in honor of the milestone anniversary, co-hosts Ellen Hyslop and Steph Rotz are spending today’s episode of The GIST of It breaking down how the match came to be, how it went down, and the impact on women’s tennis, and beyond. Let’s serve it up.
