🏀 Paint by numbers
The GIST: The 20-team NBA postseason field is officially set, but all-important positioning is still up for grabs. Squads will be especially focused on avoiding the always stressful Play-In Tournament — where each conference’s seven through 10 seeds vie for the final two official playoff spots.
- With that in mind, let’s set the stage for the final two weeks of regular-season action before the Play-In tips off on April 14th. Buckets, incoming.
🫧 The Eastern Conference bubble teams: Just three wins separate the No. 5 Toronto Raptors and the No. 10 Charlotte Hornets, leaving a whopping six teams in contention for the final two outright playoff berths. Two squads have an ever-so-slight edge though: The Raps and the No. 9 Miami Heat, who boast the easiest remaining schedules of the bunch. Watch this space.
🐶 The Western Conference top dogs: Unlike the East, the top of the standings is the most intriguing in the West as both the defending champ Oklahoma City Thunder and surging San Antonio Spurs have their sights set on the conference’s top spot. Leading the charge? Their respective MVP candidates: Thunder superstar (and reigning MVP) Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama.
- SGA dropped 47 points in OKC’s 114–110 overtime win over the Detroit Pistons on Monday, while Wemby needed just over eight minutes to record a double-double in San Antonio’s 129–114 W over the Chicago Bulls the same day, part of a 41-point, 16-rebound masterclass.
☝️ One more thing: The league’s tanking epidemic endures — there’ve already been a record-breaking 82 blowout wins (30-point margin or more) in the NBA this season as lower-tier teams push for draft position instead of playoff position. This year’s class is absolutely loaded, and the chase is on for the No. 1 pick.

🏒 Ready or not
The GIST: We’re officially in the homestretch of the NHL regular season, but only two squads have punched their tickets to the 16-team Stanley Cup Playoff, which begins on April 18th. Here’s the tale of two conferences.
- But first, a reminder: The top three teams from each of the league’s four divisions will make the postseason, plus the next best two teams from each conference.
➡️ The Eastern Conference (EC) Wild Card hunt is bananas: For starters, not a single EC team has officially made the playoffs. Six squads are still firmly in the hunt for the two Wild Card spots, with just three points separating the Wild Card–holding Columbus Blue Jackets from the last contender, the Washington Capitals. Every regulation win is worth two points — talk about down to the wire.
⬅️ Highs and lows in the Western Conference (WC): The Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars have already claimed two of the eight WC postseason berths. But while the league’s top two teams call the WC home, so does the NHL’s weakest division: the Pacific, which Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid recently likened to a pillow fight.
- For example, the Anaheim Ducks lead the Pacific, but if they played in the EC and the postseason began today, they wouldn’t even earn a Wild Card spot. Anything is possible in a Division this topsy-turvy.
⚽ The 48-team men’s FIFA World Cup field is set, world No. 16 USMNT’s final opponent revealed
Just before kickoff of yesterday’s 2–0 friendly loss to No. 5 Portugal, the Americans learned their third World Cup group-stage opponent will be No. 22 Türkiye, who earned their first berth since 2002 by defeating No. 78 Kosovo yesterday. Just 72 days to go.
- Speaking of, the U.S. once again failed to impress against their second straight top-10 international opponent last night — particularly when it came to capitalizing in front of the goal. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino has plenty to consider following this final friendly before he names his World Cup roster.
🚀 Connecticut Sun sold, will relocate to Houston in 2027
The Houston Comets — one of the W’s most successful franchises with four straight titles from 1997–2000 — is back, but the news is bittersweet. Instead of awarding Houston an expansion team, the Sun will move to Houston and will be rebranded as the Comets after the franchise was officially sold to Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta for a record $300M on Monday.
- As discussed on yesterday’s episode of The GIST of It, the revival of one of the league’s original teams is thrilling news, but comes at the cost of fans in New England — especially given numerous attempts to keep the team in the region.
🏀 Candace Parker, Elena Delle Donne headline 2026 Basketball Hall of Fame class
The Hall of Fame is about to get even more iconic with the upcoming induction of two of basketball’s best. Parker’s hoops résumé features two NCAA titles, three WNBA ’ships, and two league MVPs before her broadcasting career took off, while Delle Donne’s career accolades include a W title, two league MVPs, and even a brief foray into collegiate volleyball. Multi-faceted queens, indeed.

“Tiger Woods is not OK,” a column by Golf Digest senior writer Joel Beall arguing that it’s time to stop painting Woods as the comeback king. Woods pleaded not guilty to DUI yesterday following Friday’s arrest and also announced that he will take a break from golf and seek treatment.
👀 What to know
The Chicago Bulls waived recent acquisition Jaden Ivey on Monday after he made anti-LGBTQIA+ comments on social media. The 24-year-old will still receive his full $10.1M salary.
🏈 Who’s posting “help wanted” ads
The NFL, who are in the process of hiring and onboarding replacement refs as labor negotiations between the league and its Referees Association remain at a standstill. Not great.
