Late nights in the middle of June
From The GIST (hi@thegistsports.com)
Hope you had a great weekend!
It was certainly a thrilling one in the sports world with championships won, golazos aplenty, and a steady stream of World Cup cultural exchange content that we just can’t get enough of. Let’s dig in.

— World No. 9 tennis player Victoria Mboko, who has the support of doubles partner Serena Williams after suffering a knee injury ahead of Wimbledon, which begins in two weeks. Here’s to a speedy and smooth recovery.
🇺🇸 The USMNT captured the nation’s attention on Friday, defeating Paraguay 4–1 in their tournament opener. The proof is in the pudding sold-out kits — good luck trying to snag forward Folarin Balogun’s jersey after those two stunning goals.
- In other Group D news, Australia stunned Türkiye 2–0 overnight Saturday, capitalizing on counter-attacks despite Türkiye maintaining possession for 72% of the game.
👏 Powerhouse Japan notched an 88th minute stunner to level the score 2–2 against the perennial contender Netherlands yesterday. Samurai Blue fans celebrated, then cleaned up the stadium after the final whistle. The best tradition in sports.
💪 The other heavyweight match was Morocco vs. Brazil, which ended in a 1–1 tie and included a cheeky 21st minute lob from Morocco’s Ismael Saibari, as well as a stunning 32nd minute strike from Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior.
😱 Hours later, Côte d’Ivoire stunned Ecuador 1–0, a fierce match in which three players — two on Ecuador and one on Côte d’Ivoire — hit the crossbar. What are the odds?
🎩 Hats off to Curaçao for scoring their first World Cup goal yesterday, but the debutant Blue Wave lost 7–1 to four-time champion Germany — a shellacking that saw six different German players find the net.
👍 Last but not least, co-hosts CanMNT earned their very first World Cup point on Friday, playing Bosnia and Herzegovina to a 1–1 draw thanks to super sub Cyle Larin’s game-tying 78th minute goal.
📺 We’ll be back in your inbox on Wednesday. Here are a few games you can’t miss in the meantime:
- 🇪🇸 Spain vs. 🇨🇻 Cabo Verde (Group H) — Today at 12 p.m. ET: Tune in to see Cabo Verde’s World Cup debut…but stay to see Spain’s young stud Lamine Yamal, who is in “perfect condition” after recovering from an injury and will likely come off the bench.
- 🇫🇷 France vs. 🇸🇳 Senegal (Group I) — Tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET: This match has serious history, both the colonial and soccer kind, pitting world class French captain Kylian Mbappé against Senegal’s fearless leader Sadio Mané.
- 🇦🇷 Argentina vs. 🇩🇿 Algeria (Group J) — Tomorrow at 9 p.m. ET: Two words: Lionel Messi. Enough said.
🩷 Why are so many teams rocking pink cleats? Well, bright colors inspire confidence.
🤝 The Somalian referee who was denied entry to the U.S. ahead of the tournament will receive full pay from FIFA.
