FIFA men’s World Cup
⚽ Two strikes, you’re in

The GIST: One explosive FIFA men’s World Cup (WC) quarter-final (QF) down, three to go. Next week’s semis will be set by our next newsletter, so let’s get right to it.
💪 Dominant France knocks out Morocco with 2–0 win: French star striker Kylian Mbappé scored his 20th WC goal in 20 WC games yesterday, opening the scoring for Les Bleus in the 60th minute before Ousmane Dembélé put the game away. Morocco was notably without their injured star striker Ismael Saibari, and it showed — the Atlas Lions registered just one shot on target.
🇪🇸 Spain vs. 🇧🇪 Belgium — Today at 3 p.m. ET: Spanish teen phenom Lamine Yamal hasn’t had his breakout WC moment yet, but his first QF feels like a prime opportunity. Keep an eye on the right winger’s killer left foot, which could cause Belgium’s lackluster defense some problems.
🇳🇴 Norway vs. 🏴 England — Tomorrow at 5 p.m. ET: Whether you’ve been charmed by the Snapchat Viking or are more of a God Save the Kane girlie, there’s something for everyone here. England is the favorite, but they’re down a starting defender — and standout Norwegian striker Erling Haaland (seven WC goals) will be looking to capitalize.
🇦🇷 Argentina vs. 🇨🇭 Switzerland — Tomorrow at 9 p.m. ET: Late-game heroics have been reigning champ Argentina’s bread and butter throughout the knockout round, but they’ve also exposed La Albiceleste’s weakness: defending the counter-press. Can underdog Switzerland exploit the trend and bounce Golden Boot contender Lionel Messi?

LPGA
⛳ C’est la vie

The GIST: The Amundi Evian Championship — the LPGA’s fourth major of the season — teed off yesterday from the stunning French Alps, where history is on the line for world No. 1 Nelly Korda. Unfortunately, a nightmare start means the 27-year-old has quite the mountain to climb.
😓 Korda’s struggles at Evian continue: Her best result at the event (which is always hosted at the Evian Resort Golf Club) is an eighth-place finish in 2022. And this course is as tricky as they come: The unpredictable greens and sneaky Alpine winds consistently cause chaos. This year it resulted in Korda carding a three-over 74 in yesterday’s first round, placing her 102nd among the 132 golfers.
- Topping the leaderboard on Sunday will be a tall task, even for the comeback queen, especially with the pressure of two career-defining moments looming. Korda could complete the career grand slam (four different major wins) and earn a spot in the LPGA’s Hall of Fame with a win.
- Yes, the Hall of Fame already. Unlike in most sports, the LPGA uses an objective points-based system to determine their honorees. Korda’s just two points away (aka one major win) from the 27-point requirement and becoming the LPGA’s second-youngest inductee.
🔝 So, who is atop the leaderboard?: That would be No. 24 Aki Iwai, who had a stellar opening round and owns a two-shot lead over No. 116 Perrine Delacour, a Frenchwoman swinging to cash in on the comforts of home. There’s also a trio of perennial contenders hot on their heels: No. 5 Charley Hull, No. 7 Haeran Ryu, and the 2022 Evian Championship winner, Canadian Brooke Henderson.

🎾 Wimbledon: Championship weekend — Today through Sunday — ESPN
- Hardware time has arrived. The men’s semis begin with wild card Arthur Féry taking on world No. 3 Alexander Zverev today at 8:30 a.m. ET before No. 1 Jannik Sinner and No. 8 Novak Djokovic meet in their sixth Grand Slam semi at 10:10 a.m. ET.
- Then tomorrow brings an all-Czech women’s final battle between No. 12 Linda Nosková and No. 9 Karolína Muchová. Muchová dispatched No. 7 Coco Gauff in a tough three-setter yesterday, while Nosková cruised by Marta Kostyuk in straight sets.
⚾ MLB: Toronto Blue Jays vs. San Diego Padres — Tonight at 9:40 p.m. ET — MLB.TV
- After Jays pitcher Dylan Cease posted his third career no-hit bid over eight innings on Wednesday, Toronto’s off to face his former team, the hot-and-cold Padres, in the last weekend of action before MLB’s All-Star festivities begin. Hey now.

⚽ NWSL: Portland Thorns vs. Seattle Reign — Sunday at 4 p.m. ET — ESPN
- There aren’t any WC games on Sunday, but there’s still high-stakes footy to enjoy with one of the NWSL’s all-time great rivalries back in action.Forward Sophia Wilson’s surging Thorns take on keeper Claudia Dickey’s struggling Reign in this Cascadia Clash.
