🏴 The Tartan Army invades Boston
Scottish fans descended on Boston for group stage matches with their kilts and near-unintelligible accents…and a new international love affair was born. Bostonians were charmed as the Tartan Army took over Fenway Park for a Red Sox game (bagpipes blaring of course), and drank the bars out of beer.
- Glasgow residents also brought Boston in on one of their national inside jokes: placing traffic cones on statues around the city — a wee act of collective mischief.
🦆 Merlín the Duck becomes Mexican tournament ambassador
Sorry, Lionel Messi — the true face of this World Cup is a feathered Mexico City resident who loves to party. Merlín went viral when fans spotted him sporting his very own Team Mexico jersey and custom shoes while celebrating El Tri’s opening win over South Africa. Suddenly, he was the unofficial Team Mexico mascot.
- Since his rise to stardom, he’s featured in an official Televisa spot at the Azteca, the stadium in Mexico City, and even done a presser with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. One lucky duck.
💦 Hydration breaks emerge as Public Enemy No. 1
International soccer is always played in 45-minute halves — but this year, FIFA introduced mandatory two-minute “hydration breaks” bisecting each half. Coaches, players, and fans alike say the breaks force strategic changes and disrupt game flow, and the proof is in the pudding: The Wall Street Journal reported that in early group stage games, a quarter of goals happened right after a break.
- The breaks were added to protect players’ health against the hot summer…but when they’re enforced even on comfortable days and in climate-controlled arenas, it sure seems like they’re mainly to bring FIFA more ad money and president Gianni Infantino glamour shots. At least fans are using the time well.
🇳🇴 Erling Haaland steals the show
Many North American fans will remember this World Cup as the one that inspired a million Erling Haaland memes. The Channing Tatum doppelgänger Norwegian striker was already an international superstar thanks to his prodigious career with Manchester City, but his sense of humor and trademark hair style elevated him to obsession-status this side of the Atlantic.
- From his bromance with England star Jude Bellingham to his epic Snapchat game to his…unexpected World Cup souvenirs, nearly everything Haaland did this tournament set social media ablaze. Even Google got in on the fun with an Internet-wide Viking Row.
- Haaland’s as beloved on the pitch as he is off it…which is why he gained more than 22M Instagram followers since kick-off. Fans simply cannot get enough of the Viking King (who turns 26 on Tuesday — happy early birthday, Erling!).
