What’s cooler than being cool?

And we’re back!
The PWHL title was awarded over the U.S. holiday weekend (more on that below), but the edge-of-your-seat playoff action continues in the NBA, NHL, and beyond. Let’s get right to it.

— World No. 2 tennis star Coco Gauff, joking after forgetting her rackets (yes, seriously) ahead of her first-round French Open match yesterday. Not to worry — the rackets were retrieved, and Gauff won in straight sets. Magnifique.
NBA & NHL Playoffs
🏆 The talk of the town

The GIST: Who needs The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives when you have “The Book of Postseason Men’s Sports” brimming with drama. Let’s dig in.
🏀 Indiana Pacers push NY Knicks to the brink of elimination: Indy’s Tyrese Haliburton was exceptional in last night’s 130–121 Game 4 win, becoming the first player in NBA history to record at least 30 points, 15 assists, and zero turnovers in the playoffs — and he did it all in front of his pops. Now up 3-1, the Pacers can punch their first NBA Finals ticket since 2000 tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET.
- Meanwhile, tonight’s 8:30 p.m. ET Game 5 between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves could send OKC (up 3-1) to its first Finals since 2012 — especially if freshly-crowned league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has anything to say about it.
🏒 A pair of empty-net goals seal Game 4, 3-1 lead for Edmonton Oilers: There’s no place like home for the Oilers, who beat the Dallas Stars 4–1 last night. Edmonton’s first opportunity to clinch the Western Conference title (and their second straight Stanley Cup Finals berth) comes in Dallas tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET, but Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner has struggled on the road in the playoffs.
- Fifteen tries and 19 years later, the Carolina Hurricanes finally won a conference finals game with Monday’s 3–0 Game 4 blanking of the Florida Panthers. Is the win a sign of changing winds, or will the Cats (up 3-1) close it out in Carolina? Find out tonight at 8 p.m. ET.
PWHL
🏒 What’s cooler than being cool?

The GIST: The Minnesota Frost remain the only team to hoist the Walter Cup after defeating the Ottawa Charge 2–1 in overtime (OT) during Monday’s PWHL Finals Game 4, clinching the title for the second straight year. Ice cold.
- With another successful campaign in the books, here’s a look at the PWHL’s sophomore season by the numbers, featuring everything from postseason highlights to future-looking fun.
1: Ottawa rookie goaltender Gwyneth Philips needed just one season to win the Ilana Kloss playoff MVP Trophy. Though the Charge came up short in the ’ship, Philips made 257 saves in the postseason, allowing just 13 goals in eight games. No beginner’s luck here.
2: Not only are the Frost two-time defending champs — forward (and homegrown Minnesota legend) Liz Schepers made individual history, scoring the title-clinching goals last year and this year.
4: All four Finals games between the Frost and Charge went to OT (not to mention triple OT in Game 3) and ended in a 2–1 score, with Ottawa taking Game 1 before Minnesota rattled off three straight wins. Exhausted just thinking about it.
8: Two expansion teams — Vancouver and Seattle — will join the fold next season, bringing the total number of PWHL teams to eight and expanding the league’s footprint to the West Coast.
12: And on that note, there are just 12 days until the first-ever PWHL Expansion Draft on June 9th, but first, the league’s original six squads will reveal their three-member protected player lists on June 3rd. Stay tuned.

NCAA softball
🎓🥎 This is the greatest show

The GIST: Merry Women’s College World Series (WCWS) eve to all who celebrate — the eight-team NCAA softball championship tournament begins from hallowed Oklahoma City with tomorrow’s four-game opening slate. Here’s everything you need to know before the first pitch is thrown.
How it works: The eight WCWS teams are already battle-tested, advancing out of a 64-team field by way of a double-elimination Regional round and last weekend’s best-of-three Super Regionals. Nothing soft about it.
- As for WCWS play, double-elimination action runs tomorrow through Monday, with the two teams left standing moving on to a best-of-three championship series beginning on Wednesday, June 4th.
Can anyone dethrone No. 2 seed Oklahoma?: The four-time defending champ Sooners remain the center of the softball universe, advancing to an astounding ninth straight WCWS and 13th in the last 14. What’s more, legendary head coach Patty Gasso’s squad has won seven of the last 11 trophies. Can you say “dynasty”?
- But this stacked field is ready to challenge ’em, starting tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. ET when they face No. 7 seed Tennessee and pitcher Karlyn Pickens, who broke her own NCAA record for fastest pitch with a 79.4 MPH toss in the Super Regionals. Blink and you’ll miss it.
- Speaking of star hurlers, 2024 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year NiJaree Canady’s No. 12 seed Texas Tech squad will make their WCWS debut vs. a fellow first-timer, unseeded Ole Miss, at 7 p.m. ET.
- And then there’s the perennial softball powers — No. 3 Florida, 2024 runners-up No. 6 Texas, No. 9 UCLA (the winningest school in the sport’s history), and No. 16 Oregon — all swinging for a shot at glory. Baby, let the games begin.
